What you're seeing on your card is most likely an authorization. Merrill will authorize your card for the full amount of your order when you place it, to make sure you can cover the whole charge. They will then authorize your card as they ship items for the actual amount of whatever ships.
For example, you could have a $60 order, but $20 is on backorder. You would see a $60 authorization as soon as you place the order, and then a $40 authorization in a couple of days. Then when the backordered item ships later, you'll see $20. The $60 authorization will fall off in about 7 days.
The $1 authorizations are generally created by the system they use to verify that your address matches the address on your card (and will also fall off).
