Properly Calculate Postage for Selling on This Forum - Tips and Tricks

In summary, you can go to http://www.usps.com and enter your zip and the destination zip to get the postage rates for a specific weight. You can also determine which flat rate box would work for the item.

when you sell something in this forum, how do you go about calculating postage properly???? I don't want to over or under charge anyone!
Once I have the answer to this, I will repost my "basement" items! TIA

If you know the weight of the item, you can go to http://www.usps.com and enter your zip and the destination zip. It will ask for the box dimensions and give you the exact rate for that weight.

-or-

you can determine which flat rate box would work for the item. If it's a heavy item, the flat rate boxes would probably be your best bet.

I just bought a used vanilla round deep dish baker off ebay (to match my current collection). It fit wonderfully in the new 12X12 box. The post office also gives a $2 discount on that box to military addresses. So it was only $10.95 shipping vs. $12.95 shipping.

I guess the weight is a struggle unless I go to the PO and weigh it on their package scale.......unless there is other advice!

An inexpensive postage scale for home is a business write off. I have one and love it.

Deb, how big is the scale? I have a small one that wouldn't work for packages larger than the 10x13 envelopes.

You can get one at the PO. It works for packages up to about 10 pounds. Any bigger I take to the PO and use their scale. No line waiting to do that, PO doesn't have to be open either - ours is in the lobby that's always open, and I do it when I have to drop something off anyway - I also drive past the PO nearly every time I go anywhere...

I got my scale on e-bay. It was brend new and works great! I printed off a postage chart from USPS. I use Click-n-Ship for Priority Envelopes, and the scale works great for weighing them, too.

I ship the item then email the person the total plus shipping. Cheffers have always been great about following through on payment.

me too :) There is never a line at the self serve meter at our PO.I don't sell that much stuff to justify buying a scale.

Related to Properly Calculate Postage for Selling on This Forum - Tips and Tricks

1. How do I know how much postage to charge when selling on this forum?

The amount of postage you should charge will depend on the weight of the item, its dimensions, and the shipping method chosen by the buyer. You can use a postage calculator, such as the one provided by the USPS, to get an estimate of the cost.

2. Do I need to include packaging materials in the postage cost?

Yes, you should include the cost of any packaging materials, such as boxes, bubble wrap, or tape, in the overall postage cost. This will ensure that you are accurately calculating the total cost for the buyer.

3. Can I offer free shipping on my items?

Yes, you can offer free shipping on your items if you choose. However, keep in mind that you will need to cover the cost of shipping yourself, so make sure to factor this into the price of your item.

4. What is the best way to ship items sold on this forum?

The best shipping method will depend on the weight and size of your item, as well as the buyer's location. The USPS offers a variety of shipping options, including First-Class Mail, Priority Mail, and Media Mail, which may be the most cost-effective for larger or heavier items.

5. Can I use my own packaging materials or do I have to use specific ones?

You can use your own packaging materials when shipping items sold on this forum, as long as they are sturdy and can protect the item during transit. However, some shipping methods, such as Priority Mail, require specific packaging materials that can be obtained for free from the USPS.
