Ot - I Think My Cats Have a Cold

In summary, one of their cats, Lacey, has been sneezing and has had a pink ear. They think it might be allergies.

About 3 days ago Suki started sneezing. Yesterday she seemed to be sneezing less. Today Smudge started with the sneezing. Poor things. Can cats catch colds or do I need to call the vet?
They are otherwise acting normal - eating drinking, snuggling, napping...

ours did that this spring when we were having our bathroom textured and painted we took him in and he was allergic to dust he got a shot and pills

We brought home a new kitten from the Animal Rescue League who started sneezing. Well, he got over it but passed it onto our older cat who is still sneezing. We took both of them in last week for shots and the vet gave us an antibiotic for 10 days. He's still sneezing so I guess we'll see what happens.

I noticed Christmas had a runny nose, but I think its from the pollen as I have had the windows open lately...

My cat (pictured left), sneezed like crazy when I picked her up from the shelter. My vet said it's actually herpes for cats and it is very hard to get rid of. She said it stays with them and can start again if they are stressed! Luckily she got better:)!

My cat has gotten a cold before. She would sneeze and had a runny nose. But she got over it.
I hope your cats feel better soon!!

I think they're allergic to humans.Tell them they'll have to get rid of you and get dog.

One of our cats, Friendly Fred, is just getting over his cold. He kept following The Furry Guy, whining and sneezing.

My cat doesn't have a cold but I do! Which I don't need with a busy week of closing shows and graduation party this Saturday!

We had a cat that had "daily allergies". Just like people. He sneezed all the time, constently. And we had a cat with a bladder infection (caused from cheap dry food). My DD has an upper respiratory infection right now. :yuck:

I have a kitty that has had a couple of colds since I've gotten her from the shelter. Runny nose, vacant watery eyes, sneezes. Usually an inexpensive course of antibiotics will do the trick. You don't want to wait too long- respiratory infections in kitties is a big thing. If they are still sneezing in a day or two, a quick visit to the vet wouldn't hurt. Like I said the antibiotics are inexpensive and you only have to give them for about 10 days :)

Thanks. He's funny. He holds us personally responsible whenever he's uncomfortable. Blames us for the rain. Blames us for the snow. Blames us for the neighbor dog eating our kitties' food. You name it; it's our fault.

Sounds like Camilla Bean after Spirit (my idiot pooch) stepped on her hip yesterday. She grumbled off and on the ENTIRE night! She made us know just how displeased she was that we allowed that beast to manhandle her like he did!

Too funny! She was so offended by his blunder that she got those claws out and struck this ninja warrior cat pose that had me laughing!

I have two gold tabbies, Tiger and Lacey, Tiger is fine, Lacey does on occasion sneeze her head off. But her right eye keeps getting all watery and dark matter on occasion. She had this eye thing off and on the first 2yrs we had her, vet had us change to food with no dye and it cleared right up. We have not changed their food, but the right eye is starting up again. I am thinking allergies as we are using the ceiling fans daily. Doesn't seem to bother her, just looks miserable.

What do you all think?

Lacey's right eye only this time is starting the watery dark matter stuff again, and occasional sneezing.... any ideas???

my cat has been sneezing, and her ear is slightly pink. my DH always jumps to the conclusion "take her to the vet". I think hers is allergies. But I have had the air on for 2 days and she's been better.

hope you find out Carol about your cat.

Carol - I'd make a quick trip to the vet. That's what they are there for. Best to get that cleared up.

Janet, it just comes and goes and the other cat never gets it. I do think I will call our vet and see what she thinks...

Good advice.

Thanks

I suggest that because they are the doctors to our pets. Describe when approximately it comes and goes - days, seasons, etc.

...and describe where the gunk is and what it looks like.

It may be just allergies and it could be something else. I have a dog with lupus where symptoms come and go.

Took a vet to diagnosis and prescribe meds. I can get meds at work, but best to have the vet take a look once a year.

Depending on your vet it won't be too much to have the piece of mind!

Related to Ot - I Think My Cats Have a Cold

1. What are the symptoms of a cold in cats?

The most common symptoms of a cold in cats include sneezing, watery or runny nose and eyes, coughing, and lethargy. Some cats may also have a decreased appetite and a mild fever.

2. Can cats catch a cold from humans?

No, cats and humans cannot pass cold viruses to each other. Cats can only get a cold from another infected cat.

3. How long does a cat cold last?

A cat cold usually lasts for about 1-2 weeks. If the symptoms persist for longer than 2 weeks or become severe, it is best to consult a veterinarian.

4. What can I do to help my cats feel better?

Make sure your cats have plenty of water and a warm, comfortable place to rest. You can also use a humidifier to help with congestion. If your cats have a decreased appetite, try offering them warm and smelly foods to entice them to eat.

5. Is there a way to prevent my cats from getting a cold?

While there is no surefire way to prevent a cat from getting a cold, you can help boost their immune system by feeding them a balanced diet, keeping their living area clean, and minimizing their exposure to other sick cats. It is also important to keep up with their vaccinations.
